Due to Covid19 and isolation I began designing and producing a series of face coverings (non- medical) for family, colleagues, friends and local daycare. (100+ masks given at no cost) All of the masks were done using and/or recycling materials from my studio as online shopping had serious delivery delays/out of stock problems and all fabric stores were closed. The face covering production expanded to research into best material practices, review of scientific literature, and DIY tutorials in mask making, which then progressed to utilising my sewing and patterning skills with the Textile & Materiality Cluster’s face covering Project (lead by Professor Barbara Layne). That project goal was to produce 2000+ face coverings for health care workers which, was successfully completed and all masks were delivered on time. The project was also brought into the classroom in fall 2020 where I taught students to make their own coverings.
