roposal Theme, Content & ObjectivesThis project will lead to the re-design of the current website of St. Jude Children’s Home in Gulu, Uganda (www.stjudechildrenshome.org). The final goal is to produce a more informative, user-friendly, and accessible website that aligns with social sustainability principles.I aim to create a virtual representation of St. Jude that reflects both the realities of the home and the local context of Gulu. The website should not only serve as a means for connecting support and resources to St. Jude but also act as a statement of identity and self-empowerment.Process & ResearchI envision a “micro to macro” approach to my research, meaning I will investigate Uganda, Gulu, and St. Jude respectively and holistically, understanding their historical, social, political, and economic interactions.Since visiting St. Jude is not possible for me, I will seek first-hand accounts from people who have been there to gain a deeper understanding. With their insights, I aim to capture the essence of St. Jude Children’s Home and express it effectively in the new website.Website Content & Language FeaturesTo ensure the website is informative and relevant, I will maintain constant communication with the staff at St. Jude.Written ContentClear and concise information about St. Jude.Proofreading assistance from professional journalists.Multilingual AccessTranslating content into multiple languages to broaden accessibility.Seeking assistance from Concordia’s Translation Services to foster an interdisciplinary collaborative effort.Website Visuals & IdentityIn designing the website, I want to learn about Ugandan and African graphic design to ensure that visual elements reflect authentic cultural representation rather than a stereotypical "African feel".Aesthetic & BrandingStudying typography, composition, and local visual styles to inform design choices.Avoiding cultural appropriation while incorporating authentic semiotic elements.Comparative ResearchAnalyzing other children’s homes and humanitarian websites for best practices.Logo & BrandingIf feasible, I would like to design a logo (even if only typographic) to establish a distinctive visual identity for St. Jude.A consistent brand identity will enhance engagement and improve the user experience.PhotographyI want to ensure photography avoids the “Us-Other” gaze, which often creates a problematic power dynamic in humanitarian storytelling.I expect PK Langshaw, my instructor, to provide a portion of the photographic content.
